Fun Games and an Amazing Kid Friendly Craft for Snow Days

My kids spent a total of 5 days in school in January. That means, the rest of the time they were moping about the house and uttering those two words I can’t stand to hear – I’M BORED!

With the snow and ice combining into super storms stopping traffic and shutting down cities, I found I was forced to get creative with keeping kids busy and happy. Generally, it is a rule in our house that if anyone states they’re bored – the get housework to keep them occupied. So when the laundry, sweeping and dusting were all done here are a few tricks I busted out…

GAMES

Balloon Race: If you have spare plastic cups or disposable cups and a balloon, you can do this game. Line up cups along the edge of a table. Blow up the balloon and use the air to push the cups from one end of the table to the other. If you knock the cup off the table you have to start over. The goal is to be the first to get all your cups to the other side first. If you have an only child, give him 60 seconds to see how many he or she can get across the finish line.

Cookie Face: This easy game can be played without the need of other players. So, if you have an only child this game works too! Take one cookie and place it on your forehead. The goal is to get it into your mouth without using your hands or any other help. No flipping it into your mouth either! Get the camera ready for this one because funny faces will ensue.

CRAFT

Mason Jars Lanterns – If you have a few mason jars or glass jars with lids, you can make a homemade lantern! My kids loved this one and it inspired them to make an a good old fashioned pillow fort to take their lanterns “camping.” Kids of any age can do it and it appeals to everyone.

1. Collect: mason or any glass jars, school glue, water, glittery, paint brush, tea lights, glow sticks of LED lights.

2. Mix the school glue and a little bit of water in a small bowl.

3. Paint the inside of your jar with the glue mixture using a brush. Work rather quickly, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just ensure you have covered the entire area inside.

4. Pour glitter into the jar and tilt or roll the jar around so the glitter covers every surface.

5. Let it dry and then insert a glow stick or small LED light into the jar and put the lid on. You can also insert a tea light into the bottom of the jar and leave it open for a gorgeous decorative candle holder.
